Description
In 2024 Màiri participated in Glasgow Life’s GUIR project and writing nine new Gaelic songs inspired by Glasgow and the place of Gaelic language within the city. Màiri worked with Haitian musician and composer Germa Adan who arranged and produced the album. Rory Matheson and Matt Carmichael along with Germa accompanied Màiri beautifully creating a very unique and exquisite sound between them. All tracks were recorded and engineered by Ross David Saunders in GloWorm Recording in Glasgow.
Although from South Uist Màiri has lived in Glasgow for over 30 years and has a great attachment to the city. She enjoys the many green spaces in Glasgow and was inspired to create songs of her connections to the city.
Màiri said ‘Writing an album of Gaelic song has been a very rewarding experience. I loved re-visiting the many happy memories attached to my life in Glasgow and creating songs around these. I then took my imagination on a journey making connections with Gaelic and nature.
Glasgow is rooted in Gaelic language and many place names across the city have Gaelic origins. As Glasgow celebrates its 850th year in 2025 this album of songs to the city will hopefully continue to shine a positive light on Glasgow and her people and the place of Gaelic in Glasgow and in wider Scotland.
The album is released independently by Màiri MacMillan.
