Description

Richard Ingham’s Nine Pieces for Five Players, scored here for five saxophones, was originally written for wind quintet. Played by the Quirk Saxophone Quartet alongside the composer, the music explores both haunting and uplifting melodies, outrageous funky bass lines, abstract soundscapes, and slips easily between genres whilst exploring the extraordinary range of colours the saxophone offers. Five of the movements are solo pieces with accompaniment, highlighting each of the performers. Recent reviews of Ingham’s extensive output include – “a stirring heterophony of reed voicings” – The Scotsman; “a night of vivid colour…pulsating….an evocative and eye-opening spectacle” – The Scotsman.

Quirk Saxophone Quartet are led by Sarah Markham on soprano saxophone (“ formidably impressive….a sustained feat of exuberance….breathed an extraordinary, haunted magic. The most mesmerising thing I’ve heard all year!” – Independent on Sunday) and also featuring Kenneth Wilkinson on alto, Chris Jolly on tenor, Sarah Hind on baritone, with Richard Ingham on soprano (“potent saxophone, intensifying the poignancy of this species of Highland lament to searing effect” – The Herald).
